Lloyds Register to inspect pontoons
Two of the four floating pontoons have been unhooked from the stage and taken into dry dock at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead.
They will remain there for approx 6 weeks whilst undergoing tests required by Lloyds Register.
Part of the contract with Balfour Beatty was to have the cruise terminal inspected as part of an independent verification survey. This work should have been done when the pontoons were in the water, but poor visibility made the inspection work impossible.
Two of the pontoons were surveyed and examined before the visit of the QE2, and now the others have been taken into dry dock. The two other pontoons passed their inspections.
There is nothing wrong with the structure and this is part of a requirement by Lloyds Register. This work does not indicate any problems with the landing stage however it was decided to do the work now as there are no cruise liners scheduled to visit until next spring.
