Cultural Capsules - the Bluecoat
Since re-opening in early 2008, after a £12.5m redevelopment, the Bluecoat is a major landmark on the UK map of contemporary culture and a unique expression of a changing city with a dynamic vision for the arts.
It aims to engage, inspire and stimulate visitors, whether they come to create, view, listen, eat, shop, talk - or simply be. The Bluecoat's vision is to provide a link between the local and the international, the past and the future, creating a place where history and imagination come together.
It houses a vibrant community of creative people - artists, performers, writers, crafts people, creative businesses and retailers - all committed to using their emerging talent to innovate and excel. Together they break down traditional barriers between creator and consumer, involving and exciting visitors.
Cultural Capsule
Put teamwork to the test with the ultimate collective creative exercise. Pupils will respond to themes under pressure of time and "draw something, pass it on", "write something, pass it on" echoing the process of Canadian artists Royal Art Lodge. But which suitcase will they choose to put their finished work in?
