Streetwaves 2008

Streetwaves is a Culture Company Music Project that animates and makes use of Liverpool's 5 neighbourhood areas and Merseyside boroughs in order to find the 'Most Ready' act from each area to play a set at Mathew Street and Creamfields.

So what do we mean by Most Ready?

  • An Act that is well organized on the day

  • Has a positive attitude and good work ethic

  • An original musical style

  • Can play their instruments to a good standard

  • Can represent Liverpool well overseas

  • An Act that is ready to take the step up to the festival circuit

  • A band that will use the opportunities as a springboard to further their musical career

Being named as the 'Most Ready' Act will open doors to some fantastic opportunities;

These include playing Mathew Street Festival & Creamfields 2008, recording tunes at Elevator Studios, working with leading designers A Design Collective.

2008 Events

The five up-and-coming bands that blasted through the heats of Liverpool's annual Streetwaves competition earlier this year are returning to their home city in November after a summer of performing across Europe.

Streetwaves started three years ago as a way of providing a doorway into the music industry for young, talented bands in the city.  The competition joined forces with Liverpool's Culture Company for the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations, and has given this year's bands unparalleled exposure to a European audience.

These talented young musicians aged between 14 and 25 years old stormed the stage at Creamfields 2008, sharing the bill with Kasabian and Fatboy Slim, and embarked on a special European tour including Bremen, Gdansk, Naples and Istanbul.

On Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November they will be performing in Marseilles for the final festival of the series, before returning home to Liverpool with invaluable experience and exciting opportunities ahead of them.

The experiences of one of the winning bands from 2007 - Major Major - is an example of what the competition can do for those that take part, as they perform on tour in support of Franz Ferdinand, have been offered a slot at MTV Liverpool Music Week this month and look forward to a slot at next year's Glastonbury festival.

Head of Music programming for the Culture Company Gordon Ross said: "Streetwaves provides young musicians with an exceptional opportunity to gain valuable experience and make contacts within the music industry. There is no other competition like this in Liverpool, and we are excited to see new talent developing in the city each year."

Streetwaves forms part of Liverpool's European Capital of Culture Cities on the Edge programme, which is part-financed by the European Union under the Culture 2007 - 2013 programme and unites six port cities from across Europe - Liverpool, Bremen, Gdansk, Istanbul, Marseilles and Naples - for a range of cultural events and exchanges.
